Skills before states

If you’ve followed my work you’ll know that I am a big proponent of states versus skills. But as I’ve said before let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater as skills still have their place. Often they are the foundation to one’s state. And if the pressure comes on we sink to our lowest form of training, so a strong base is still really important. So perhaps it’s worth looking at some of the skills we need to consider prior to performing optimally. It most likely comes down to 4 areas…

  • Values – these can be far reaching and ever present. Whether we are aligning ourselves to our personal or corporate set.
  • Performance management – on an ongoing basis we need to pay attention to 2 things: goals and feedback.
  • Self leadership and leadership – knowing where to focus is key. On ourself brings energy in, with/for others leads to energy out.
  • Phases of performance – it’s never an on or off, more so a cycle between: struggle, release, flow and recovery.

If you have enough of these skills and awareness in your locker then you can hit your straps and seek out states of optimal performance. Likewise you need the appropriate equipment and training before attempting to climb a mountain.
