Why we all need to get (helpers) high?!

When we are in the zone, losing track of our time and of ourselves we are in essence getting high. The rich cocktail of neuro chemicals kicks in and we strive to recreate the mindset, environment and creativity again in the future. We also get high when we are helping others. The reward and feeling is so great we look to repeat it – helpers high.
A quick shortcut to this flow state might involve helping a colleague at work, flashing your lights to let another driver through or holding doors open for others. These short and sharp bursts of helpers high keep our default position of performance in good shape. They provide a timely reminder to brain and body to support (and sometimes challenge) others.
Your time is precious but if you are helping others and noticing a feel good factor then give yourself permission to at least maintain (if not increase) the highs that you and others can experience.
